National Doctors Day was observed in India for the first time in 1991 to pay tribute to the service of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy was not just a gifted doctor but someone who actively participated in establishing multiple healthcare institutions such as Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital and Chittaranjan Seva Sadan. The great physician and India’s second Chief Minister was awarded the prestigious Bharat Ratna on Feb 4, 1961 for his noteworthy contributions to the medical system in the nation. The British Medical Journals mentions him as India’s first medical consultant.
